Background on milk component analysis

Dairy milk samples are routinely tested in the laboratory setting for their macronutrient composition of fat, protein, lactose and somatic cell count. There are many reasons for milk component and quality testing which include: payment to dairy farmers, herd improvement, and overall assurance of milk quality to dairy processors. Component testing is most accurate and reliable when the dairy sample is fresh and tested within 24 to 48 hours of collection, but this can rarely be achieved since most samples must be transported from the farm to the lab for analysis.

The need for dairy milk preservatives

It is not always possible to ensure the short turnaround time and storage conditions of milks samples from the farm to the laboratory. During the period between sampling and analysis, milk quality can change due to microbial proliferation within samples. Growth of bacteria and sometimes fungi causes milk to degrade leading to inaccurate test results. Time and temperature are the enemies of milk.

Broad Spectrum Microtabs

To overcome the challenges of milk preservation, Advanced Instruments provides Broad Spectrum Microtabs (BSM), the safest and easiest way to preserve milk samples for testing. Broad Spectrum Microtabs II is a tablet preservative containing a combination of bronopol and natamycin which inhibits the growth of both bacteria and yeast and mold. Samples preserved with BSM can be held at room temperature (22°-25º C) for at least 14 days without sample degradation. It is an ideal preservative solution for longer-term preservation of milk samples when a short sample analysis turnaround time and refrigerated storage conditions cannot be guaranteed. BSM may be included in calibration and control milks at normal laboratory usage levels to obtain maximum system accuracy.

Bronolab II Liquid Preservative

Bronolab-W II is a liquid preservative solution containing 18% bronopol. It is used by laboratories preferring the convenience of a liquid preservative for the short-term preservation of milk samples which will be analyzed on infrared and somatic cell count instruments. It is active against bacteria but not yeast and mold.

Milk samples must be adequately refrigerated during transportation and storage at the laboratory in order to inhibit the growth of yeast and mold. Bronolab may be included in calibration and control milks at normal laboratory usage levels to obtain maximum system accuracy.
